Most people cannot wait for spring to arrive. It is the
perfect time of year to get your hands in the dirt and get your garden planted.
To ensure your garden reaches its full potential, it is vital to properly
prepare your soil prior to planting. With two simple steps, your soil will be
ready for whatever you are planting.
Prior to starting these two steps, you must keep timing in
mind. When preparing the soil for spring, it is vital that you do not start too
early. If the soil is still semi-frozen, or too soggy, then digging and working
with the soil can be harmful. The simplest way to determine if the soil is
ready to be worked with is by squeezing a handful of it. It is too early if the
soil forms a mud ball. The handful of soil should easily fall apart.
First Step: Loosen Soil
The first step in readying your soil is to dig it up and
loosen it. You want to be sure to go through the entire area, digging up clumps
of soil, turning it over, and dropping the loosened soil in the same hole. This
step is an essential part of making your soil fertile and nice.
Second Step: Add Organic Matter
The next step in preparing your soil is to add organic
matter. This ensures that your soil is nutrient-free and thick. Manure, compost,
shredded leaves can all provide your soil with different nutrients. This
organic matter can help the plants grow.
Most gardens must have their organic matter refilled at
least one time per year. The best time would be the beginning of the season.
